'What we see in theatre is a reflection of the society in which we live'

My solo, Home, from Beetle Juice, was a song in which the character Lydia tries to talk to her mom in the Netherworld, But during this she comes to the realization that her mum is in fact dead and cannot bring her back to life. After a while of searching for her mum she realises the ones around her care and she still has people around that are there for her. If we were to look further into the meaning of Beetle Juice as a whole, There is not much of a backstory on why it was created, But as we look at musicals of the time, they are mainly seen to be fantasy musicals in which the audience can watch and forgot about life.

If we have a deeper look into the musical and the song itself, not only is it a fantasy world in which slightly reflect our world but in a way that it seems like a breath of fresh air to the audience, but the songs in which it includes explore the emotional struggles of the characters which the audience may be able to relate to. For example, In home, we see Lydia desperately looking for her mum who is dead and during the song we see her going through the stages of grief in song form as she sings about not knowing how to live and as if she is lost with out her. From an audience perspective this may be relatable to people that are struggling with loss and struggling to move on from it as they may have depended on the person to much. However, by the end of the song, Lydia finally see that she still has people around her that love her, which shows the audience that just because someone they love may be gone there are still people around that care about them.

When it come to society, During this time (2018) and also more modern society, when it came to the general mental health of people, Especially in teenagers, seems to be getting worse and worse and they seem to be depending on others for instruction on what to do, So when a loved one they depended on leaves their life they may feel that they no longer have a reason to keep going and find themselves lost. And as we see in Beetle Juice, Lydia experiences the same feeling.

In conclusion, What we see in theatres reflects the society we live in and it is made apparent in Beetle juice when we take a deeper look at it.
